It’s that time of year when love is in the air, for the deer herd anyway. We have placed steel fence posts around our newer trees to protect them from amorous bucks attempting to claim territory as theirs. Bucks rub their antlers on trees primarily to remove the velvet from their antlers and leave their scent on the tree. Marking their territory lets other bucks know the does in the area have been claimed as theirs. As you can see in the first photo one of our bucks started early and made it to this tree before we did.
